Pottas FARM WORLD – A Legacy Rooted in the Soil Since 1948

Pottas FARM WORLD is more than a farm—it is the continuation of a remarkable family legacy built on hard work, perseverance, and a deep respect for nature.

In 1948, our founder, Pottas Itten Verghese, made a life-changing decision. Leaving behind a successful handloom business and entrusting the family jewelry business to his children, he chose instead to dedicate his life to farming. He purchased fertile land near Chatupara and began cultivating rice, sugarcane, and rubber, laying the foundation for what would become one of the region's most respected agricultural enterprises.

Farming in those days demanded extraordinary determination. Water for the paddy fields flowed from a mountain stream and waterfall. While others waited for their turn, our father would often climb steep, thorn-covered paths in the middle of the night, carrying only a torch, to divert water to the fields. The rugged trails were filled with rocky terrain, dense bushes, and even venomous snakes. Yet his dedication never wavered.

His commitment to excellence earned recognition from the Agriculture Department, which proudly displayed a sign identifying the property as a “Model Farm.”

Sugarcane became one of the farm's signature crops. During harvest season, skilled workers from Marayoor arrived with bulls and massive traditional pans to process sugarcane into jaggery. Tons of jaggery were produced and stored in woven palm-leaf sacks, becoming cherished memories for the family. Every year, sacks of fresh jaggery were brought to the ancestral home, where children eagerly enjoyed this sweet tradition.

Despite his success, our father often felt limited by the educational opportunities he never had. Determined to provide a better future for his children, he prioritized education above all else. His vision bore fruit as the next generation excelled across diverse professions, including agriculture, medicine, aviation, engineering, banking, law, business, landscape architecture, and public service. Two of his children earned degrees in agriculture, carrying forward his passion for farming.

When illness prevented him from managing the farm, John Pottas, who had been working as a pilot, returned home to Chatupara to support his father and continue the family’s agricultural journey. Following our father’s passing, John and his wife Ammini expanded and modernized the farm while preserving its traditional values.

Today, Pottas FARM WORLD has grown into a diversified agricultural enterprise cultivating and managing:

The family remains actively involved in community development, public service, and agricultural innovation. The next generation, including prominent lawyer Ajith Pottas and his wife Manu, continues to contribute to the growth and vision of the organization.

Over the years, Pottas FARM WORLD has welcomed numerous distinguished visitors, including former State Governor R.L. Bhatia, reflecting the farm's reputation as a model of agricultural excellence.
